The end of season race day for WLYC Juniors, age 6-14, took place on Saturday 18th October in great sailing conditions.
The Brasileiro Trophy and prizes are donated each year by former WLYC member Dougie Hague. The Brasileiro Trophy is a half model of a ship, mounted on the wall of the club. The unusual name of the trophy comes from the company which owned the full size vessels, Petroleo Brasileiro SA. Dougie Hague was a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer Surveyor who worked in Rio de Janeiro for many years.
18 juniors took part in the race day. They were divided into four fleets based on their level of sailing ability. Each fleet sailed three races with 1 discard available.
The winners of each fleet were...
OnBoard: Elliott Goldup
Beginner: Jolyon Cropper
Intermediate: Fleur Birchall-Vural
Advanced: Alastair Rimmer
There were some great races and all of the competitors made every effort to sail to the best of their ability. The Galley provided fantastic food and ongoing refreshments throughout the day. The end result was a highly memorable day that was enjoyed by all.
During the presentation, Bob Caton acknowledged in particular the help from Sylvia Gilland for organising each week's attendance and progress and also Stella Pettifer for providing Galley refreshments with her team throughout the season.
Bob Caton and Mike Dorr would like to thank everyone who has helped in any way with Junior Training this season. We look forward to starting again next spring.
