Aberdeen and Stonehaven Regatta Weekend 2014

by Bob Yeamans 2 Sep 2014 10:14 BST 30-31 August 2014

24 visiting boats swelled the local fleets to provide 2 days of competitive sailing during the Aberdeen and Stonehaven Yacht Club annual regatta, sponsored by The Bay Fish and Chips, with support from Aberdeenshire Council. The event being part of the Scottish Laser, RS200 and Skiff traveller series.

The wind on the Saturday brought some testing conditions, with the wind gusting up to force 5 and varying in direction due to coming off the shore in Stonehaven Bay. 3 races were managed to be held for the 6 fleets, despite some confusion when the committee boat dragged its anchor midway through the 2nd race. Having survived the tricky conditions, all the sailors returned ashore, and welcomed the traditional evening BBQ and refreshments.

Sunday dawned with a lighter northerly wind which was also intent on flickering around causing some issues for the race committee. The 4th race being affected by a 45 degree windshift during the finishing procedure. Race 5 was abandoned shortly after the start, this time after a 90 degree shift, with most boats reaching from the start to the windward mark.

Fortunately the wind settled down, with a steady force 3 coming in from the south. Allied with a south tide, it made for a few mistakes on the start line, especially amongst the ever-keen Laser Radial fleet.

This event is supported by the European Regional Development Fund, through a Rural Tourism Business Support Project which aims to deliver an innovative, collaborative, partnership approach to improving tourism products in the East of Scotland.
