Gul Falmouth Dinghy Week 2014 - Day 4

18-22 August 2014
Thursday is the day of the harbour race. Harbour races are about visiting each part of the Carrick Roads using club and navigational marks. With the wind being westerly, and rising, the fleet set off (at the second attempt!) for Trefusis Mark just next to Falmouth, this was to be followed by Pendennis shipyard mark next to Black Rock.
Unfortunately a towed ship being moved early got in the way and became the second mark itself. Commercial traffic has to be avoided at all costs but the air must have been blue in quite a few dinghies.
Then the wind kept rising and caused a few concerns amongst the race and safety crews as 26 knots was recorded. However dinghies are good at both coping and capsizing in these conditions and great fun was had by all.
The waves were high going into, and out of, St Mawes, and the reach from St Mawes to St Just was phenomenal. Apparently some asymmetrics don't reach that well but for the rest of the fleet the reach was awesome.
The race officer finished the race after one lap at Trefusis Mark, and a fourth and very successful day for Falmouth Dinghy Week was complete. This was followed by the prizegiving at Restronguet, with a live band and great food served up the galley.
A really fun night had by all.
