Scorpion National Championships at Teign Corinthian YC - Practice Race

by Penny Jeffcoate 10 Aug 2014 20:07 BST 9-15 August 2014

As people converged on Teignmouth for the 2014 Scorpion National Championships, they scanned the sky for signs of the threatened approach of the tail end of Hurricane Bertha. The wind was taking its time but despite this, there was a steady south-westerly force 4-5 blowing when PRO, Don Harrison, started the Practice Race at 1500. 18 boats had managed to get through the traffic jam on the M5, and get to the line. Only 13 finished the short race round a triangle-sausage course.

Tom Gillard and Sam Brearey (Sheffield Viking SC, 2018) was first round the windward mark but was forced to retire when his toe straps went – at least it was a sign they were hiking hard! Ellie Pegg and Richard Haines (Yealm YC,1952) were also up among the leaders until they went for a swim.

Come the next day, Bertha was starting to make her presence felt and the PRO decided to postpone the first day of racing until Monday 11th. It looks like it is going to be a breezy week.
