Seavets Windsurfing Association event at Bala Sailing Club

by Dave Wall, Race Officer 29 Jul 2014 22:11 BST 26 July 2014

The Seavets Windsurfing Association held an event at Bala SC on Saturday 26th July 2014. There were 15 entries, all using raceboards which were in use by UKBSA members in the 1980's. The youngest entry was 53yrs and there were 3 entrants in excess of 80yrs. The eldest being 82yrs young.

Racing should have started at 11am but total becalmed conditions caused a postponement. The RO was confident the wind would would appear by 11.30am. The 1st race started at 12noon having a SW wind of 8mph. After sailing an M course lasting 30mins, Tony Chandler, a megavet (over 70yrs) with a 7.5m sail was the winner. The first octogenarian, Hugh Norris was 11th also using a 7.5m sail.

After a short lunch break, there were 3 back to back races each of 30min duration. That takes some stamina, again with Tony Chandler winning all 3 afternoon races in a SW wind averaging 18mph.

After racing, the Seavets held a BBQ at the sailing club (39 with family and friends) the bar staff were kept busy supplying them with drinks. Boy could they drink. A good time was had by all.
