Day 1 dawned sunny with the promise of a sea breeze – and Carnac delivered. After 2 days of scrutineering it was good to get the show on the road. 184 boats divided into 3 fleets for the day to get 3 qualifying races in. Eight to nine knots from the Carnac sea breeze direction got the cobwebs dispelled for Race 1 and this built a little to finish race 3 with 12 gusting 14 knots and the sailors working their socks off. Cloud cover rolled in for the second race, causing a handful of sailors to go home early due to the unexpected cold.

With results from 3 fleets the overall position after day 1 is incredibly tight. Both Jack Lewis & Lucas Marshall and Edward Norbury & Charlie Hutchings took home two race wins. So before discards kick in after the next race that leaves them in 2nd and 3rd respectively split by their 5th & 8th positions in the other race. Leading overall however are Will & Matt Taylor who posted a 2,1,2 day! Ironically they would have had to share the regatta lead with Piers Nicholls & Freddie Peters with the same scores bar for a penalty for not signing out!

Nikol Stankova & Vasek Brabec (CZE), 3rd place at the Europeans are in 8th. Hannah Tucker & Bethan Matthew are leading the girls trophy points while Will & Matt are also leading family and Jack & Marshall are leading Juniors. Simonas Jarsovas & Gabrielle Petraityte from LTU are 10th and Giacomo Giambarda & Daniele Minoni (ITA) are 13th. Top non Europeans at present are Julian Fung & Thorwen Uiterdaal from Hong Kong in 18th.

Final 3 races of the qualifying series are Monday and then we'll know who are in Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets. Follow this space!
