Icom Supports National Schools Sailing Association Regatta

by Ian Lockyer, ICOM UK 18 Jul 2014 18:28 BST 21-25 July 2014

Icom UK is supporting the National Schools Sailing Association (NSSA) National Youth Regatta, taking place at Downs Sailing Club, Kent from 21-25 July.

Hosted by the Kent Schools Sailing Association, the event attracts over 400 youth competitors sailing over 300 boats, making it one of the largest participation events for young sailors to take place in the UK. Competitors will be coming from the whole of England, from Cumbria in the North to Devon in the South West.

Whilst Toppers and Laser Radials are the predominant classes, the handicap fleet will consist of a diverse range of boats from Optimists to 29ers. Icom will be supplying the event with a range of land-based two way radios and marine radios to help organise this huge event. The land-based radios will be used for general organisation whilst the marine radios will be used by the 34+ support/safety vessels for race support, mark laying, course patrol and the Medical Boats.

Chris Shelton, Chairman of the Regatta Organising Committee said, "The National Youth Regatta is probably the largest single youth sailing event in the UK and we are particularly pleased to have the support of Icom."

"With almost 300 sailing dinghies racing on the open sea, clear and precise communication between the safety boats, the race management teams and the shore crew is essential. Icom have provided us with radios, private channels and the specialist knowledge to develop a comprehensive communications network. Without their support the management of the Regatta would have been a lot more difficult."

He added, "We are looking forward to a great week of sailing, safe in the knowledge that communication systems will be excellent thanks to Icom."
