Sharps Doom Bar Salcombe Merlin Rocket Week 2014 – Overall

by Tim Fells 11 Jul 2014 20:27 BST 6-11 July 2014

The day 6 showdown was raced in conditions which were as tricky as Salcombe gets. A light Westerly breeze meant that there was little to no wind on the start line or through the harbour. Nerve jangling stuff for those fighting for the prizes.

Race 11 – Red v Black flights. Westerly Force 1-3. Course 7,5,7,X,3,X

The morning race saw the teams in first, second and fourth overall doing battle. With little to no wind going up to mark 1, the PRO sent the fleet up North bound although this meant a running start into the ebb tide. Tim Fells and Chris Downham, needing a win, nailed the start again and broke free to extend a big lead coming back out of The Bag for what was going to be a very challenging loop in the harbour.

In a near repeat of the previous day, they sat in a windless hole and watched the chasing boats of Mike Calvert and Ian Garwood and Alex Jackson with Sarah Bines power up on a gust to join them. On the final legs to the finish, Mike and Ian slipped through to take the win from Alex and Sarah with Tim and Chris a disconsolate third. However, the battle for the overall title was playing out behind them.

Olly Turner and Alex Warren clawed their way up to fourth to sit on 14 points overall, while overnight leaders Tom Stewart and Phil Dalby could only recover to 6th after a bad start, putting them on 15.5 points. This meant that only Dave Winder and Pippa Taylor of the teams competing in the afternoon race could take the title with a third of better.

Race 12 – Green v Blue fleets, Westerly Force 1-3, Course 1,4,1,4,2,3

Initially it looked like this race might be canned with a rain cloud killing off what little wind there was. Tom Stewart watching from the club house terrace was praying this would be the case but unfortunately for him the breeze returned and, after a 10 minute postponement, the fleet lined up for a very light wind beat against the flood tide. This was a day when being on the Portlemouth shore was the winning call, but you needed to be up on the line as many boats were washed back past the ferry as they struggled to find any wind.

Tony and Louis Johnson won the start and led up the Portlemouth side but Simon Blake and Chris Dodds did what they do best, picking the shifts perfectly up past Mill Bay to lead by a minute at Blackstone. Behind them the battle for the overall title was going in the direction of Dave and Pippa who rounded fourth behind Taxi and Ellie.

Over the long loops down to Yalton and back, Tony and Louis fell back and Dave and Pippa got the better of Taxi and Ellie, crossing in second place to take the overall title.

Overall

This is the third year in a row that Dave and Pippa have won the week, moving them into Merlin Rocket immortality. It is an amazing achievement, given the strength and depth of the talent competing in the class and the complex challenges and unpredictability that Salcombe week presents. They sailed absolutely superbly, rescuing front end results from difficult starts, maintaining their composure in the face of the worse Salcombe can throw at you and keeping the boat moving close to optimum speed at all times. They are masters of Salcombe and it will take a fantastic team to beat them next year.

Thanks to our sponsors Sharps Doom Bar and to the SYC race and bar team.
