Trying conditions greeted skippers for Day 1 of the Magic Marine 2014 Marblehead Worlds in Gouda, Netherlands. Oscillating winds ranging from 2 - 7 knots made life difficult for the race team but racing got under way just after the 10 am start time. 4 races were completed with skippers divided into the standard 4 up, 4 down promotion/relegation format, giving a total of 20 heats raced over the day.
Results were mixed and with a discard not due until race 5, defending champion Brad Gibson from GBR holds a slim lead over Graham Bantock, also from GBR. Local Dutch skipper Joop de Jong sits in 3rd, just ahead of Croatian Ante Kovacevic and Frenchman Patrice Montero in 4th and 5th respectively.
A long way yet to go in this event that runs through until Friday and with stronger Northwest winds predicted for the coming days, skippers are sure to settle further into the racing with scores expected to move.
