With one month to go until the skippers and crew of over 250 boats take part in the Commonwealth Flotilla, RYA Scotland is calling for the people of Glasgow, Inverclyde and the rest of Scotland to come out in force to support the flotilla – which will be the largest collection of boats ever assembled on the river Clyde.
Over 1,200 sailors are expected to make the journey from Greenock to the Glasgow science centre on the morning of Saturday 26th July 2014. The Commonwealth flotilla will be a highlight in the official Festival 2014 programme of events.
Whilst spaces to take part in the Commonwealth flotilla sold out just a few weeks after the event was announced, RYA Scotland is keen to ensure that as many people as possible are able to take part in this unique event. Dedicated spectator areas at the Beacon arts centre in Greenock and the Riverside Museum in Glasgow will be open on the morning of Saturday 26th July 2014 to allow thousands of spectators to view the flotilla as it makes its journey up the Clyde.
Speaking ahead of the event, RYA Scotland CEO James Stuart said: "This is going to be an amazing summer to be in Scotland and the Commonwealth flotilla is shaping up to be one of the must-see events of the Festival 2014 programme. The response we had from people wanting to take part in the flotilla was overwhelming, and we want as many people as possible to join us for the grand departure at the Beacon in Greenock, or the Riverside Museum in Glasgow, which will provide a fantastic viewing opportunity for people to get a real sense of the size and scale of the event.
"We plan to publish full details of spectator opportunities shortly but with one month to go we want to make sure people mark this date in their diary and come out in numbers to support this event."
