Laser and Streaker Open at Burwain Sailing Club

by Innes Armstrong 21 May 2014 09:03 BST 18 May 2014

The annual Laser and Streaker open meeting took place at Burwain SC on Sunday 18th May. A total of 22 Lasers and 13 Streakers (21 visitors in total) arrived at the club with the sailors treated to a southerly breeze and plenty of sunshine. The OOD set the course in plenty of time and duly gave a briefing emphasising the importance of clean starts especially to the eager Laser fleet!

The first race saw the Laser fleet manage a clean start, with Ian Jones (Dovestone) showing a clean pair of heels throughout the race followed by Adrian Sandiland (UKLA) and local sailor Ashley Johnston.

With a change of course allowing for the shifting breeze in race 2, once again Ian Jones led from start to finish, leading by some margin, this time followed by an identical finish from Peter Nelson (Burwain) and Graham MacWhirter (UKLA & Halifax) followed by a capsize after the finish almost onto the committee boat by Peter, with the OOD trying to extricate the Laser from the line before the other Lasers finished.

With the open won Ian could have sat out the final race but opted to race, and with a perfect start at the committee boat again led from start to finish. The battle was then who would finish 2nd overall. A tight battle took place in the decreasing wind with Adrian Sandiland finishing a solid 2nd to take 2nd overall and Graham MacWhirter finishing 3rd overall with 4th in the last race.

A special mention goes to the 2 sailors in the 4.7 fleet who raced well with George Graham (Burwain) finishing 1st.

The Streaker fleet were able to watch the Laser fleet start and work out their routes to the first mark and Dan Phillips (Ripon) made the most of this by coming in first only after a tight battle with Mark Pearce (Burwain). 3rd was Sal Radcliffe (Scammonden) much to the delight of her dad who finished way behind the daughter, the talk was of Sal walking home at this stage!

The second race was a familiar sight with Dan again taking 1st place, followed by Ben Radcliffe (getting the better of daughter this time) and 3rd was Ian Lees (Scammonden), making up for missing the 1st race.

So again, like the Laser fleet, the winner was already known but did not deter him from going out. Dan came home first again followed by Ian Lees and Mark Pearce whose positions were reversed in the final placings. Fortunately Sal didn't have to walk home as dad finished 1 place ahead of her.
