Helensburgh sailor Calum Rosie in winning form at Topper Inlands

by Claire Caffrey, RYA Scotland 6 May 2014 18:59 BST 3-4 May 2014

Helensburgh Sailing Club's young Topper sailor, Calum Rosie, won the 2014 Crewsaver Topper Inlands at the weekend at Grafham Water Sailing Club in Cambridgeshire, showing fantastic form after a winter of hard training.

The event is the first of two major events for the under 16 Topper Class each year, and saw 171 sailors descend on the inland lake of Grafham Water to compete for the impressive trophy.

Light wind conditions were the order of the weekend, but the race organisers still managed to get four good quality races completed over the two day regatta, allowing the young sailors to post some fantastic performances and experience some close racing in a big fleet.

Calum Rosie, an RYA Scotland Development Team sailor, sailed consistently over the weekend in all races and held his nerve to secure the overall win by just one point after securing two third places and a race win. The result adds to Calum's win at the Topper Crewsaver Winter Regatta in March in Weymouth, proving his spectacular form heading into the summer.

Calum becomes the first Scot to lift the trophy since Campbell Davidson did back in 2002, and is seeking to follow in the footsteps of current GB Sailing Team sailors Giles Scott and Elliot Hanson who have both won the trophy in the past.

"This is a great result for Calum. He has progressed magnificently over the last year and is starting to reap the rewards of not only his but the entire Development Team's hard work," said RYA Scotland High Performance Manager Nick Scott.

  • Anna Sturrock: 30th
  • Mara Lyon: 44th
  • Niamh Harper: 51st
  • Angus Lawson: 55th
