2000 Crewsaver Millennium Series at Broadstairs Sailing Club

by Chris Brown 6 May 2014 18:48 BST 3-5 May 2014

Fishermans cottages meet Charles Dickens meets the 2000 Class. Not quite the Viking invasion of 449AD but the 2000 class arrived at Viking Bay Broadstairs with equally serious intent over the first 2014 May Bank Holiday.

The meteo models had predicted static high pressure and light E/SE winds which combined with strong tides was always likely to produce an interesting race track. Choppy waters and shifting winds added to the challenge for the 17 boat fleet. The light conditions did however provide an opportunity for various lightweight youngsters to be "tested out" by parents!

Saturday provided a morning of training before the 2 scheduled BSC Club races on Saturday afternoon, which shook away winter cobwebs in what were the strongest conditions of the weekend. Following an evening of well catered BSC hospitality, racing duly commenced on Sunday afternoon after a 3 hours postponement until the forces of nature finally co-operated. This delay provided an excellent opportunity to sample local fish & chips & ice creams while studying the Sunday Newspapers.

Close racing on Sunday saw a treble of bullets from team Burridge with a 2,2,3 from the second Burridge boat - local competition being provided by Dave Adams. Further excellent BSC hospitality on Sunday evening preceded another trio of races on Monday morning, again in strong tidal conditions. This time, Dave Adams prevailed in 2 of the races, showing the value of local knowledge in the tidal waters.

The top 3 places of Rob Burridge/22503, Matt Greenfield/2458 and Dave Adams/2145 were rounded out by Matt Sargent/2355 in 4th and Chris Brown/21102 in 5th place. We are all indebted to BSC for one of those wonderfully unforgettable weekends.
