This weekend saw the start of Saturday racing at Hollowell, a definite signal that summer is on the way. In glorious weather and almost perfect winds, around 20 sailors took part in the start of the Saturday Spring Series. Saturday sailing is generally a more relaxed affair than the Sunday racing, although one particular competitor sailing Solo 207 still managed to lose his way around the course!
However, the main event this weekend was the Sunday Sprint racing, which again took place in glorious sunshine. Nine races - three in the morning, followed by six after lunch. It was very well attended with 27 boats in total taking part. Credit has to be given to John Smith and his duty crew team who were under pressure all day.
The winner was veteran Laser sailor Ian Clarke. He was followed by Keith Lancaster in his Solo and then Mike and Helen Playle in their Wayfarer. Hollowell's Juniors, Aaron Holman and Andrew Sturt took 4th and 5th respectively.
As the day ended, winds across the reservoir made finishing interesting, especially when Rob Dunkley in the ISO had an argument with a tree as he ran out of sailing water!
This coming Easter weekend sees the continuation of the Saturday Spring Series, as well as the more competitive Sunday Spring Series. Then on Bank Holiday Monday, Hollowell hosts the annual Easter Egg Personal Handicap – a popular event which is always well attended by families.
Readers of this report may be interested to know that Hollowell Sailing Club will be holding its annual Public Open Day on Sat 10th May starting at 11.00. If you have ever wanted to try sailing for free, come down and give it a go.
