Salcombe Yacht Club Spring Series - Race 2

by David Greening 25 Mar 2014 09:41 GMT 22 March 2014

Saturday 22nd March saw blue skies and brisk 20 to 30 knot Westerly winds over Salcombe Harbour. Race officer Alistair Morley set a course to Blackstone followed by Gerston and then back for a loop of the harbour.

Thirteen Solos took to the start line, and the strong ebb tide created quite challenging wind over tide conditions, with big waves, whilst the westerly wind shifted dramatically making it difficult for sailors to commit to one tack or the other.

Tim Law's return to the fleet saw him dominate the start, accrue a good lead by Blackstone, which he drew out over a windy Widegates, to take the winning bell. The fight for the lesser places was more interesting, with Chris Cleaves, Bill Jago, Graham Cranford-Smith and David Greening constantly in touch and swapping positions around the course. A wild final run through the harbour saw some place changing and capsizes, but Chris Cleaves prevailed in the end to take second place from David Greening.

In the Handicap Fleet only three boats made it to the start line. The Laser of Robin Hodges made the front running from the Streaker of Clare Booth. The major excitement was the Yawl of Andrew Wood and Stephen Page "going down the mine", and was seen sunk with her transom just above the water, fortunately this was not terminal, and she was later recovered with the assistance of the Club rescue boats.

Over the past two weekends Salcombe Yacht Club has run an RYA Dinghy Instructors Course with Pete Muskett the local Regional Development Officer of the RYA, with help from Ross Crook who is doing his Coach Assessors Course.

Six SYC members have become qualified instructors Peter Ballantine, Torrin Blazeby, Henry Bright, Tom Morris, Henry Wadey and Jayne Morris. We are grateful for some funding from Active Villages to provide this opportunity to qualify instructors as we shall now be able to provide more structured learning to our Cadet section and expand the opportunities of new members learning to sail with SYC.

The Cadet season starts on Saturday 26th April and Tuesday 6th May.
