1-2 March 2014
The Commodore and Council Members of SCYC were present at the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show on Saturday 1 March 2014 to collect the GJW Direct Insurance (GJW) venue of the year 2013 award. The Commodore, Pete Hawkins, was photographed proudly collecting the award from GJW's Mike Pope.
SCYC was founded in 1924 and has a proud history of hosting prestigious championship events. Maintaining the highest standards both on the water and in the Club's unique clubhouse overlooking Cardigan Bay, the Club offers unrivalled benefits to existing and new members.
SCYC has an enormous wealth of experience in running National, European and World Championships. Every year several National Championships are held in Abersoch, and this has been going on for years. The first Nationals ever run at Abersoch were the Fireflys in 1951 with others soon following, indeed many Dinghy and Keelboat classes have held their Nationals or Worlds at Abersoch. The Club is fortunate that Abersoch is perfectly situated and designed to host the whole range of events, with accommodation to suit everyone from luxury hotels, self-catering houses, B&Bs and camp sites. The beach is one of the safest and shortest in the country and has proven to be an ideal spot from which to launch and view the racing. The walk from the clubhouse to the beach is less than one minute.
Abersoch is a central location with easy driving off the Irish Sea ferries from Ireland and The Isle of Man docking at Holyhead, Birkenhead or Liverpool. The venue itself offers pristine sailing waters with no commercial traffic. Tides, such as they are, are fair, local knowledge will not play a part in championships. For families left ashore, the beaches offer clean sand with warm and clear waters.
