Apolonia crowned champion

The last race of the 2014 VTR Chiloé race took place today and Ramon Eluchans' Yali achieved its second victory. Jaime Charad's Apolonia crossed the finish line in the fourth place, which was enough to win the event.

The race started two hours late due to wind instability and difficulties in setting the course. The boats started after 2 pm with a 15 knots N wind and completed a windward – leeward course of 4 legs in the Puerto Montt bay. Yali was the first to arrive, followed by Jorge Araneda's Santander and Horacio Pavez's Mitsubishi.

After that, the Race Committee tried to start another race, but unluckily the conditions were not favorable and the fleet was sent back to port. So the championship ends with 9 races and the winner of the Chilean traditional race is Apolonia, which added 37 points. The other places of the podium were completed by Bernardo Matte's Pisco Sour -who was occupying the first position in the previous days- and Mitsubishi.

Apolonia's skipper was the Spanish Iñaki Castañer and its tactician was the American Dee Smith. The other sailors on board were Jaime Charad D., Jaime Charad A., Agustín Charad, Iñaki Zuazola, Ignacio Amunategui, Alexandre Gauza da Rosa, Patricio Middleton and Torkel Borgstrom.

The 2014 VTR Chiloé race, main event of the 2013-2014 VTR Oceánico championship, started on last Saturday with the Puerto Montt – Calbuco race and continued with different races that moved the fleet to different places such as Puerto Montt, Calbuco, Quemchi, Achao, Castro and Mechuque. The fleet also completed some windward – leeward courses.

The VTR Oceánico championship next date will be the Anniversary race that will take place on March 7, 8 & 9.
