Thirty boats convened for the middle week-end of the Chichester Yacht Club Open Frozen Toe Series, and the fleet was greeted with grey skies, a gentle northerly breeze of 10-12 knots and a chilly 8oC. With a late tide and only 1 race scheduled, Race Officers Nick and Biddy Colbourne set a slightly longer course than usual.
In the 6 boat fast fleet, Andy Palmer-Felgate and Rich Anderson of CYC in their Fireball showed the rest how a "horizon job" should look, crossing the line 7 minutes clear after a one hour race. Second on the water in the RS400, but 3rd on handicap, were Rob Corfield and Chris Campbell of Dell Quay SC. 3rd over the line were Olivia Winther and Hattie Culver (CYC) in their RS200, taking 2nd on handicap. The Laser Vago XD of Richard Bentley and Ian Anderson (Felpham) was 4th, but they retain their lead in the series.
The medium fleet of 14 was again dominated by the single-handers. Although the Laser of Jimmy Carter (CYC) was first on the water, the Solos of Guy Mayger (Lancing SC) took first on handicap, with Mark Harper (CYC) 2nd. Lucy Boreham sailing her Europe took 3rd. Consistent performances give these 3 sailors the same positions in the series to date. In the CYC 2000s, Mike and Paula Olliff, fresh from coaching on Saturday, beat Helen and Mark Green.
With a smaller turnout this week, the 10 boats in the slow fleet were shown the way by Emsworth SC boys J Taylor and J Halliday in their RS Feva XL, who were first over the line but 2nd on handicap to series leader Howard Lane from Lancing in his Topper. Jessica Carter (CYC), back in her Topper this week, took 3rd. The CYC Optimists of Oliver Randall May and Alice Snook battled tide and light to finish admirably in 4th and 5th. Hannah Thompson sailed well to beat Charlotte Reading (both CYC) taking 6th and 7th in their Toppers.
