Cadet class at the Waldringfield Cartoon Trophy

by Neil Collingridge 11 Sep 2013 13:08 BST 7-8 September 2013

Waldringfield's Cartoon Trophy saw challenging conditions for the Cadet fleet which nevertheless numbered 18 entries including both old and new partnerships.

Saturday saw the strongest winds but Willow and Cara Bland continued their strong form from Cadet week and the Nationals by posting 1, 1, 4 in the first three races. In the first race controversy struck as one of the leaders, Henry Stone and Harry Chatterton were adjudged OCS and Archie Penn and Hazel Whittle retired after finishing for an earlier infringement.

Things settled down for races 2 and 3 though the wind didn't abate and there were a number of capsizes throughout the fleet. In the third race Ed Harris and FAye Chatterton had a strong showing to win to keep some pressure on the overnight leaders in Gotcha. Archie and Hazel bounced back with 2 third places after earlier disappointment.

Sunday was somewhat calmer though still gusty and quite shifty. Ed and Faye piled the pressure on the Bland in race 4 but the girls responded in races 5 and 6 winning both. Archie and Hazel through in a couple of 2nds and a 3rd to secure third overall with Hattie Collingridge and Daisy Nunn securing 4th place overall ahead of elder sister Daisy Collingridge with 6 year old Hamish in 5th.

Another very competitive weekend of sailing, some great performances and lots of experience gained by all.
