D-One UK National Championships at Castle Cove Sailing Club - Day 1

by Charles Chandler 14 Jul 2013 10:30 BST 13-14 July 2013

As usual the sun and heat followed the D One fleet to its chosen corner of the UK. Castle Cove are hosting the 2014 D One GBR nationals kindly sponsored by Sandiline, Harken and North Sails.

In race one Nick Craig lead round the first lap. Charlie Chandler came past Craig on the second run and a close tacking battle started up the third beat. Craig managed to test the water temperature at the third windward mark allowing Chandler the easy win. Christ Sallis came across the finish line in second, followed home by Craig in third.

In the second race Chandler and Craig had a close race for three laps with Chandler taking the lead down wind and Craig sneaking past up the beats. Craig sailed a very fast final run to take the win followed by Chandler. Giles Chipperfield came in third.

In the third race Craig led round the windward mark closely followed by Paul Smalley and Sallis. Up the second beat Craig and Chandler sailed out to the right following a tacking duel. Meanwhile the left paid allowing Sallis to climb up to second. At a close finish Craig took the victory, followed by Sallis and Chipperfield.

Racing continues tomorrow with all to play for. The big question is will the wind come out to play?
