Llangorse Sailing Club to host watersports fun day

by Hamish Stuart, RYA Wales 13 Jun 2013 09:03 BST 15 June 2013

Llangorse Sailing Club is hosting its fourth water-sports fun day for people with disabilities on Saturday 15th June. Sailing and canoeing will be available with qualified instructors and supervisors from the sailing club and also from Brecon Canoe Club. The event is supported by Powys County Council and Disability Sports Wales.

Commodore, Claire Ellis, said: "Our annual event has attracted up to 80 attendees who have enjoyed the experience of dinghy sailing, kayaking or "Canadian Indian-style" canoeing. Sailing, in particular, has become a very successful sport for people with disabilities offering a great sense of freedom and opportunity to enjoy the open-air. Many people have been inspired by the Paralympic sailing that has developed in recent years and which was show-cased at the Paralympic Games last year."

Beverley Tucker, Disability Sports Officer from Powys County Council said: "This is one of many special events in our calendar for disabled people. It's an event which offers a great new and unique experience for many disabled people."

The excitement and exhilaration of sailing is provided in 14-foot sailing dinghies with a qualified instructor at the helm and some specially-designed sailing boats are on-hand for some disabled people to experience the joy of sailing themselves. Similarly visitors can join-in with some experienced paddlers in a Canadian Indian-style canoe, or an especially kitted-out kayak.

Disabled people and their carers can take part free of charge. Parking, changing-room and toilet facilities are available on-site. Visitors who are looking to take to the water are advised to bring waterproof jacket and footwear and a towel and change of clothes in case they get wet.

"The day starts at 10am," Claire Ellis continued. "But we will be running the event until 4pm: visitors are not advised to arrive later that 2.30pm in order that they are not disappointed." She concluded, "We would like to get as many people on the water as possible. It's a great fun day for everyone involved!"
