28-30 June 2013
It is just over three weeks until the Supernova Class heads to Brixham for the first time for their National Championships over the weekend of 28th-30th June. And what a bumper Nationals it is looking to be! There are already 52 entrants (a 52% increase on the last few years figures) which already makes it the best attended since 2004 (when 53 competed) and is certainly the class's best attended sea event.
The class has secured the sponsorship of Hartley Boats - who as well as competing - are helping with the sailing and some spot prizes, Neil Pryde who are providing event t-shirts and Parkers of Bolton who have donated a fabulous Go-Pro camera which is being used as a draw prize.
It is a high quality fleet that is making its way to the idyillic English Riviera with no less than 6 previous National Champions attending - including two double champions. There is no clear favourite, and from the results at events this year a case could be made for any of 10 names or so to be in the frame. In the silver fleet it is the same story!
Once again it is the Masters fleet (over 50 less than 60) with 21 entrants that is the largest age grouping and with the veteran fleet (over 60) having 14 entrants competition throughout the fleet for most of the various titles at stake will be tight.
The introduction of the lighter, stiffer, coveted MKII Epoxy hull has been a tremendous success and has seen new faces joining the class and more boats coming onto the secondhand market (but not generally for long!) as existing Supernova sailors upgrade. Fleets have become established at a burgeoning number of clubs. By the time of the Nationals over 50 of these new boats will have been built and delivered and there is a healthy order book. It is all looking very positive for the class.
All we need now is for the lovely weather to hold!
