An excellent 'drifter' was held at Leigh and Lowton SC for the first open of the Phantom Travellers Northern Series 2013. There was a good entry of 13 boats, despite the poor weather forecast, with sailors travelling from Plymouth and London.
The racing was more like 'lucky dip' with the wind swinging around, but somehow the top guys got all the luck! At one point in race three, all five home boats were in positions 1 to 5, but a gust came from the other side of the water and the natural order resumed!
The results were close with final positions only being decided in the last race, with two wins for Richard Catchpole. A first place in race three by Phil Worth pushed him up the results table, and Ed Thomas in third place.
The race officer, Kay Tickle, and her team did a marvelous job under difficult conditions. The galley kept the Phantom sailors well fed - just in case the wind got up!
Everyone who attended the Race Training Day on Saturday stayed until Sunday for the Open and put their new found knowledge to good use. Excellent, educational and embarrassing photographs were taken by Dave Wright.
