On Saturday evening at Marconi Sailing Club's annual Winter Dinner and Dance the East Coast Piers race team presented a cheque to local charity, The Cirdan Trust.
The Cirdan Trust based in Maldon organise sailing trips for young people from underprivileged backgrounds providing them with an unforgettable sailing experience on some of Maldon's iconic Thames' Barges.
The cheque for £14,374 was raised from the 25th East Coast Piers Race held in July last year. Over the race weekend 65 catamarans and 7 fast dinghies took on the two long distance courses with the Colne Point race record being broken by 5 minutes.
Probably the longest established long distance race in the country, since 1987 the East Coast Piers Race has attracted top continental sailors, and development classes, along with the cream of big cat sailors. However, the East Coast Piers Race isn't just for big cats - a shorter, but no less demanding course (known as The Colne Point Race) is always available for smaller cats. For the 25th year the shorter course was also opened up to fast dinghies with a PY of 917 or faster.
The East Coast Piers race team couldn't do this without our sponsors and the dedicated members of Marconi Sailing Club. Thanks to Wildwind, Adnams, The Moment Images, Brentwood Communications, Dinghy Rope, Funky Monkey Boat Names, Yachts and Yachting, Am Safety Specialists and GP Sails.
The date for this years race is the 29th and 30th June. Free camping is available from Friday through to Monday. For more information please see our website www.eastcoastpiersrace.com or like us on www.facebook.com/eastcoastpiersrace
