Junior Offshore Group ('JOG'), organisers of the 1000 mile BNY Mellon Challenge to Portugal, via La Trinité in Brittany and starting from Cowes on 14 June 2013, state that the event is now fully funded and starting to attract interest for both the 350 mile Cat 3 leg to La Trinité and the onward 650 mile Cat 2 race to Cascais.
Those who have already registered include some MOCRA multihulls and monohulls from both ends of the design spectrum. Txema Garcia & Santiago Orlando from San Sebastian, who completed the 2011 Biscay Challenge are entering their French built Bongo 9.6 'Baobab' in the Double Handed class and in contrast, Antony Fanshawe, the current owner of the classic 26ft Nicholson designed SCOD 'Firecracker' has also declared his interest. Built in 1962, she was completely restored by a previous owner.
Race Director Roger Townsend said: "I am delighted that we have interest from the multihulls, as their involvement will be a first for JOG, and 'Firecracker' encapsulates the very spirit of why JOG was formed 60 years ago. However, I would welcome further expressions of interest for either leg of what promises to be a great race".
