RS600 National Championships at Pwllheli Sailing Club - Overall

by Nicola Holden 12 Sep 2012 11:23 BST 8-11 September 2012

Going into the final day Jamie Mawson had the title pretty much sewn up but there was still lots to play for.

Blue skies and a brisk northwesterly offshore breeze meant the sea would be calmer. The wind however stayed up in the 20 knot area so boat handling would still be the key to success.

Race 7 got underway with Pete Nelson getting around the top mark first closely followed by Chunky and Jamie. Pete unfortunately capsized at the leeward mark and in the process knocked Pete Williams clean off his trapeze. Oops! The places finished with Chunky taking his first bullet followed by Jamie and then Matt Holdon. Paul Procter's bid for a podium finish unfortunately ended when his halyard gave up and he had to head in.

Race 8 saw Chunky take the lead early on with everyone else trying to chase him down. Matt, possibly trying too hard, capsized on the gybe allowing Pete N and Jamie through. Richard momentarily forgot he was reefed and was like a Jack Russell biting at the heels of the full rigs. The race ended Chunky, Pete N and then Jamie.

The final results were therefore Jamie Mawson 1st, Anthony York 2nd and Pete Nelson 3rd. Matt Holdon was first Probationer and Alan Goule was first Master sailing in his 7th consecutive 600 nationals.

Thanks must go to Pwllheli Sailing Club for their excellent race management and hospitality, we would be very happy to return some time in the future.

We would also like to invite all 600 sailors (current and potential) out there to get in touch and get involved with your class. Pete Nelson has just taken over as class rep and would welcome any thoughts and ideas for the future.
