40 boats travelled to Oxford SC for the first of the UKLA GUL Ladder
event of the 2012/13 series.
Saturday provided perfect weather.... for hot air ballooning so the
fleet were held ashore all day. The locals were confident that Sunday
would provide improved conditions but we had to wait until after lunch
for the breeze to fill in. Three races were eventually run on a outer
loop course. Oxford SC's PRO Richard Hall had to use the black flag to
keep the eager 4.7 sailors at bay.
Race 1 was won by Scottish sailor Jamie Calder who was sailing his
first event having switched from the Optimist Fleet, followed closely
by Karyna Manuel, Olivia Burt, Joe Woodley, James Bishop and Cameron
Race 2 was won by a country mile by Josh Atherton, with Jamie Calder
in second, Sam Tweedle in third followed by Jake Farren Price, local
girl Caitlin Tweedle and another top six for Royal Lymington's Olivia
By the time Race 3 got away the windsurfers were rigging-up indicating
a building breeze. Three sailors, including the race 2 winner,Josh
Atherton of Gurnard & Royal Lymington had an early shower courtesy of
the black flag. The race was won by Karyna Manuel, with Joe Woodley in
second and Jamie Calder sealing the overall win with an impressive
third. Caitlin Tweedle took 4th, followed by two more new sailors to
the Laser 4.7 fleet, Dominic Hall of HISC & Papercourt and Mathew
Viney of Cardiff Bay.
The UKLA would like to extend its thanks to the staff and volunteers
at Oxford Sailing Club for an excellent event, and to our sponsors
GUL. This event was the first of 10 Ladder events planned for the
season. GUL vouchers were awarded to the top 3, Jamie Calder, Karyna
Manuel and Olivia Burt, Caitlin Tweedle for the first Oxford sailor
and Ross Banham for the first under 14 sailor.
