Enterprises at Midland Sailing Club

by Paul Young 13 Jul 2012 15:45 BST 8 July 2012

This event the ninth in the 2012 Enterprise Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Midland Sailing Club on Sunday 8th July.

The ten boat fleet included visitors from Earlswood Lake, Emberton Park, Redditch, Rugby and Daventry, Shell Island and Sutton Sailing Clubs.

The light and variable winds tested the patience of both the competitors and race officer alike. The first race saw Mike Cossey crewed by Christine Barron (Sutton SC) lead around the first mark and for a couple of legs until the third mark, when sailing on was a mistake, Martin Davies crewed by Laurence Davies (Rugby and Daventry SC) and Ian Ingram crewed by Marie Bond (Earlswood lake SC) took advantage of the windshift without the need to tack and sailed straight to the fourth mark leaving Mike and Christine in third. Later Ian and Marie overtook Martin and Laurence to leeward to take the lead for a couple of legs until Martin and Laurence regained the lead which they held to the finish. Second was Ian and Marie with Mike and Christine third having passed Paul Young crewed by Crawford Mc Leary (Midland SC) on the last beat. Barry Moss with guest crew Angela Hurd were fifth.

The second race started after lunch on the same course. This time Paul and Crawford lead at the first mark from Barry and Angela close behind. On the following downwind leg, Paul and Crawford were passed by four boats. Barry and Angela now took up the lead followed by Ian and Marie, Mike and Christine and Martin and Laurence. Two laps later Barry and Angela lost out approaching the top mark, when they were both overtaken and undertaken by Ian and Marie and Martin and Laurence respectively. Martin and Laurence now held the lead to the finish, second was Ian and Marie with Mike and Christine third and Barry and Angela fourth.

With the overall winner now decided the third race which was sailed back to back with the second would decide the other places. On a new course Barry and Angela rounded the windward mark first ahead of Ian and Marie. Barry and Angela continued to lead for almost the whole race until the last lap when Ian and Marie snatched the lead which they held to the finish. Martin and Laurence passed Mike and Christine on the last lap to finish third.

Winning helm Martin Davies thanked everyone involved at Midland SC for a good days racing.
