Waples Wines Flying 15 Northern Travellers at Ogston Sailing Club

by Jonathan Ward 27 Jun 2012 11:40 BST 16-17 June 2012

A compact fleet, due in part, to the weather forecast, braved the elements to enjoy a fantastic day of racing on the Saturday with 3 races taking place in strong winds (force 5-6) and gusts of 30 knots.

Simon Longstaff and Jon Denwood (Bassenthwaite SC) battled with Jon & Julia Ward (Ogston) to take race 1 with Rod Shiers & Dave Marshall (Ogston) 3rd. Race 2 saw a similar tussle with the 2 leading boats and this time Jon & Julia Ward took the victory from Simon & Jon, followed by Dave Driffill & Brian Kelly (Ogston).

A pattern was emerging by race three with Simon & Jon flying up the beat after being put about on the start line to take the lead at the windward mark from the Wards. They held this for the rest of the race and finished first with Jon & Julia Ward 2nd and Rod Shiers & Dave Marshall back to 3rd place again.

Sunday brought lighter breezes but interesting shifts, as can only be experienced inland. The Bassenthwaite visitors reigned supreme in both races in a dying breeze – they did confess that they had taken to the skies that morning and flown over the water in a light aircraft to ‘see what the wind was doing' – perhaps this helped. Either way, a deserved victory!

Overall Results:

1st 3973, Simon Longstaff & Jon Denwood (Bassenthwaite SC)
2nd 3667, Jon Ward & Julia Ward (Ogston SC)
3rd 2736, Rod Shiers & Dave Marshall (Ogston SC)
