Laser Open at Oxford Sailing Club

By Matthew Hall on 27 Jun 2012 23 June 2012

The forecast of wind and rain did little to discourage the 36 entries to this year's event, though the Standard fleet lost what the Radial fleet gained as a few sailors traded down after viewing conditions from the clubhouse.

By 11.00 the wind had moderated slightly so the first race was run in 20kts of wind with a few stronger gusts to keep everyone concentrating. Race officer Martin Hough got the Standard sailors away first attempt followed by the combined Radial and 4.7 fleets, everyone held back by the wind and chop.

In all three fleets, the eventual winners showed their form early, the first race prediciting the final outcome.

Launching after lunch was interrupted by a strong squall with a stinging rain shower but that proved to be the end of weather; as the wind quickly settled back to a steady force 3. Again the standard rigs got away cleanly but the combined second start was less orderly and earned themselves a long wait for the standards to clear the start area before getting away second time under the promised black flag.

In the Standard and 4.7 fleets, local heros Alan Davis and Caitlin Tweedle repeated their morning bullets but visitor Alistair Goodwin had a disaster, leaving the Radial honours to Fraser Woodley.

The last race more or less followed the established order with Caitlin rounding out a perfect performance in her 4.7 followed by the consistent Hannah Brown with two 2nds and Jack Ward with two 3rds. In the Radial fleet Alistair recovered his form, posting another win to take the trophy by one point from Fraser.

Behind him John Foord did just enough to stay ahead of Ollie and and Will Sellers. In the standard rigs Phil King was able to spoil Alan's day in the last race to earn second place followed by Gareth Greenfield in 3rd.

The meeting forms part of the Thames Traveller Series so thanks to Rooster Sailing for the prizes. Thanks also to the race team and numerous volunteers who make the event possible.
