Many teams entered the upcoming Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta in The Hague, the Netherlands, which starts next week with the 'Vuurschepenrace'. About 400 yachts will commence in the three separate events of the Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta. Celebrated Dutch sailors Roy Heiner, Gideon Messink, Arend van Bergeijk, Gerd-Jan Poortman, John den Engelsman, Nic Bol and British Olympian Stewart Middleton are on the entry list. The new J class Rainbow will sail around the racing courses as a special feature. And the recently elected new Olympic multihull Nacra 17 will be shown to the public in the shopping mall The Passage in the city centre

Professionals and recreational competitors will sail in the offshore and coastal races. Organizer Frans Sluyters: 'For instance Olympian Roy Heiner will sail the TH38 'Hemels van der Hart' in both offshore races, the Vuurschepenrace and R.O.R.C. North Sea Race. Also (former) professional sailors as Gideon Messink, Arend van Bergeijk and Gerd-Jan Poortman will attend in the Swan45 class.

Vuurschepenrace

The Vuurschepenrace is the traditional opening race of the Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta. Alderman of sports of The Hague, Karsten Klein, will fire the starting gun off the bow of the Dutch Navy boat Hr Ms Snellius. About fifty yachts in the ORC and IRC classes are attending in this 110 nautical miles offshore race to Harwich, England. The route is slightly changed to avoid the windmill farms just off the English coast.

After the finish the sailors will be welcomed in the Royal Harwich Yacht Club in Woolverstone, where also the price giving will be held. On Ascension Day the sailors will enjoy a luncheon in the old smugglers pub the Butt and Oyster in Pin Mill, just before the start of the R.O.R.C. North Sea Race back to Scheveningen. A lot of English yachts will also participate in this offshore race to Holland.

The entire fleet can be followed live through tracking & tracing at the website www.dlnsr.nl.

Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta

Around 400 yachts will participate in the races just of the coast of Scheveningen in the Whitsun weekend. Sluyters: 'There won't be many Lasers this year because of the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik in the same week. But the rest of the classes are well represented. Especially the Melges 24 is growing. Well-known sailors as Hendrik Hellman, John den Engelsman, Nic Bol, Hein Ruiten and British Olympian Stewart Middleton are participating. Also the J24 class is booming again. And of course the 80 to 100 catamarans on the course closest to the Scheveningen beach. The F18 class in particular is well represented."

J class Rainbow

The Dutch J class Rainbow will visit the Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta as a special feature. This is the only time the newly launched forty meters long classic boat can be seen on the Dutch waters. After the Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta the Rainbow will sail to England and Italy and further on to the Caribbean. The Rainbow hosts special guests in the Whitsun weekend and sails around the racecourses.

Ashore

Also ashore there will be plenty of liveliness. On the quay there will be a nautical market and a playground for kids. Not only in the harbour, also in the city centre there is much to see about the Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta. In many shops the shopping public can see photos of sailing yachts made by photographers Richard de Jonge and Sander van der Borch. In the shopping mall The Passage the just elected Olympic catamaran class Nacra 17 will be exposed.
