British Moth Training Weekend at Whitefriars Sailing Club

by Roger Witts, BMBA Publicity 29 Mar 2012 08:27 BST 24-25 March 2012

The 2012 British Moth 80th Anniversary Year kicked off with a Training Weekend in the Cotswold Water Park, Gloucestershire. The Moths were joint guests with the CVRDA at Whitefriars S.C.

The forcast good weather attracted 15 boats with long distance participants from Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Suffolk. The weather, as it did most everywhere, exceeded everyone's expectations with wall-to-wall sunshine and a perfect light breeze for such an event.

The event majored on ideal set ups and rig settings but for many it was pre-Open Meeting race practice. Help with tuning and tips on rig setting and contols were by Rupert Whelan and Roger Witts.

A series of mini-races succeeded in sharpening everyone up and allowed each to gauge the benefits of the advice given against others at the event. Support and help for all levels is key to Moth Training events... front of the fleet, mid-fleet or newcomers... all were represented in this very friendly class.

On show was the new Claridge prototype/demonstrator. The blue one at the Dinghy Show was tried by many and deemed to be quick and comfortable with its clean efficient layout.

The race practice has hopefully helped all who attended as the Open Meeting Season starts at Frampton-on-Severn on Saturday 31st March - the first ranking event in the Travellers Series for the Somerville Trophy.

Thanks go to Whitefriars S.C and Rupert Whelan in particular for the initial invite and his meticulous organisation.

Whitefriars is a popular Moth venue and will see the Class returning later in the year for a Somerville Trophy ranking Open Meeting.

Has the restricted development genre had its day? Let's start with a little Christmas Quiz and play spot the odd one out.
