To help clubs and centres develop a greater understanding of discrimination and equality, the RYA has developed a brand new set of Equality Training videos which will be officially launched at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show 2012 (03-04 March, Alexandra Palace, London).
The series of six case study clips are entitled ‘What if I…” and cover a range of subjects including age, marital status, gender and disability.
“Whether you’re a club, organisation, instructor or a volunteer, the equality training clips have been created to present situations which could possibly occur and suggest some solutions to the challenges that could arise” explains Sailability Manager Debbie Blachford.
“The 2012 Equality Act places duty on sailing clubs and centres to provide for, and not to discriminate against someone for a reason of a personal characteristic. This may change the way in which you do things, the nature of your buildings, or even the policies of your organisation”.
The Equality Training videos will be available on the RYA website from 03 March and will also be played on request at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show where you can enjoy a glass of bubbly and find out more information about the project.
“We know that no situation will be identical to the ones we have illustrated in the training, but we hope that the clips will help people to gain a deeper understating of the ways in which you can give everyone a good, welcoming service and avoiding causing any upset and falling foul of the law” Debbie concluded.
The advice provided in this series should be treated as guidance only; for a full explanation of the Equality Act you should seek professional advice.
