Bay Regatta at Ao Chalong Yacht Club, Phuket - Day 2

By Ao Chalong Yacht Club on 3 Feb1-5 February 2012

Day two of The Bay Regatta saw sailors depart from their mooring off Paradise Koh Yao Boutique Resort & Spa and head south towards Krabi sailing through the breathtaking limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay, one of the world's most scenic cruising grounds. Participants had a free night in Ao Nang, Krabi, as there was no official party organized.

The five-boat Racing Class saw the top three finishers repeat their placings of the first day with Ruby Tuesday taking first on corrected time and Gusev Boris Gastion and Scott Duncansons Quantum Fusion finishing second and third again. Standings after two days were obviously the same with Ruby Tuesday leading with two points, Gastion in second with four and Quantum Fusion in third with six points. Gastion was the quickest boat across the water on this day finishing in 3:47:02. Duncanson, by the way, was the world junior offshore champion back in 1988 and his father John was a noted yacht designer Downunder.

The seven-boat Bareboat Charter division was won by Sergey Kozubs Creme Brulee (aka Venture) with Petr Kochnevs Tonicola 2 finishing second and Daniel Brandenburger's Fei Mao taking third for the second straight day. The overall standings looked the same with Creme Brulee leading with two points, Tonicola 2 in second with four and Fei Mao in third with six.

The 13-boat Multihull Class was won by Andrew Stranskys Fantasia with the Bruce Issel skippered DaVinci coming in second and Fergus Wilmer and Henry Kaye's Sweet Chariot placing third. Overall, Fantasia lead with three points, Miss Saigon and DaVinci are tied for second with six.

Kevin Gillows Poco took first in the eight-boat Cruising B action with Gavin Welmans Rascal coming second and Kevin Perrans Rusalka placing third. After two days, Rascal led the class with three points; Rusalka was in second with seven points and Poco in third with eight points.

The third most common language spoken at this years regatta after English and Thai was Russian as there are five Russian entrees; Ruby Tuesday, Gastion and Ocean Agassi (all in the Racing Class), Creme Brulee aka Venture (in Bareboat Charter) and Uminoko (in Cruising A).
