Junior Winter Regatta at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club
By Richard Catchpole on 30 Jan28-29 January 2012
Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club hosted their annual Junior Winter Regatta on Saturday 28th January. With 35 boats turning out, it was looking good only for the wind to fail to show up. In any event, a fun no-rules race was held to entertain the kids with prizes to boot.
With the real racing reschduled for the following day, alongside the North West's premier Winter Series at Leigh, competitors took to the water again in a gentle force 1-2. Racing was tight in the Toppers with James Grummet eventually pipping local boy Haydn Griffiths by a couple of seconds, with Nick Devereux in 3rd. In the second race, Haydn and Nick ruled themselves out of contention with OCS starts, while Tom Walwork took line honours to clinch 2nd overall. 1st girl was Lucy Mearns.
In the Optimists, Charlotte Watson had it her own way with 2 bullets, keeping pace with some of the Toppers. The final category was the Under 19 youths, where Jenny Cant took the honours in the handicap fleet and Curtis Mearns and Jamie Catchpole dominated the 29ers.
In end a great weekend on the water after the wind came through in the end.
Overall Results:
Toppers
1st - James Grummet
2nd - Tom Walwork
3rd - Gareth Staple-Jones
Optimists
1st - Charlotte Watson
