Labrouche masters conditions again

56 Optimist sailors attended the Winter Open at Papercourt on Saturday 7th January. This is a traditional start of season’s curtain raiser, with top-level squad sailors and first time regatta fleet sailors, mixing in together.

David Labrouche from DSC/WMYC, the winner of the Autumn Open, showed his mastery of the tricky conditions and ultimately won comfortably counting a 2,1,1 – though had some of the other front runners mastered the Black Flag more efficiently it would likely have been a closer battle.

The blustery NW definitely provided variety with a wind force 1 to 5 and a restricted first beat putting a premium on a good start hence the penchant for BFDs among the fleet. The consistent Thomas Johnson from Blackwater carded two seconds in races 2 and 3 to grab the runners up slot. Iain Bird from the home club was third overall after winning the first race but like 4th place finisher Ross Thompson from Frensham was black flagged in Race 2. Lucy Mellors from Chichester was first girl in 12th place.

The day’s entertainments were concluded with an extensive tea and cakes that had followed a slap up lunch for all. As well as the overall top 6 classification, prizes were also awarded through the fleet for under 13, 12, 11, top girl, middle of fleet, top home boats and endeavour prizes. We can’t always guarantee the most consistent wind conditions but the welcome to visitors will always be top notch.
