106 entries for the 2011 Brass Monkey event at Yorkshire Dales SC was double the previous record – and with 96 taking to the water, the club must be doing something right! Entries included several current and ex National / World Champions so winning this one was going to be tough.

The forecast conditions had threatened to make things difficult, but a day long lull in the near gale force winds allowed the competitors to enjoy a gentle force 2 for most of the day. Due to the size of the fleet, starts were split into two flights (fast / slow) on a line across half of the lake. By the start of race one, earlier rain had stopped, but it was still a little murky. A mixed course was set with two beats, a run, broad and tight reaches.

The RS800s were leading round the course but it wasn’t windy enough to use big asymmetrics to full effect and so holding their handicap proved difficult. Nick Miller in his Blaze had none of these complications and obviously enjoyed the conditions to win from Tim Holden’s Contender, and Neil / Hannah Marsden in a 420. Dave Woodhead/Jerry Hannabus were the first of two Scorpions in fourth – beating Steve Walker/Andy Service by a few seconds. Jonny McGovern / Sarah Williams were the first RS200 in 6th.

The club galley team led by Pam did an amazing job between the races serving over 150 hot meals with virtually no queuing and pudding / drinks as well – all for a fiver. How do they do that? Definitely the performance of the day.

There was slightly increasing breeze, sunshine and different course with two beats a run and a long reach for race two. That clearly suited Matt Mee / Emma Norris in their RS200 who were keen to make up for their BFD in race 1 and led from the first run. They were chased hard by more 200s in the shape of Chris Pickles / Laura Westell, Keith Escritt / Anne Saul, Jonny McGovern /Sarah Williams and Phil / Naomi Smith but while Mee extended his lead to win the race , the others couldn’t get far enough clear of the Marsden’s 420 who took the second place on corrected time.

The other important handicap battle was going on elsewhere as Holden’s Contender and Miller’s Blaze fought their way to third and fourth places, leaving the 200 group in 5th – 8th places.

All this lead to a fantastically close finish with the top three boats all on 5 points.

Congratulations to Nick Miller in his Blaze whose first race win meant he took the top spot on the podium. Neil & Hannah Marsden’s 420 and Tim Holden’s Contender were also on 5 points and only separated into second and third by their last race result.

Fourth and leading home club boat were Pix and Laura, just a point ahead of Jonny McGovern/Sarah Williams both in RS200s.

Next were the two Scorpions of Steve Walker/Andy Service and Dave Woodhead/Jerry Hannabus - on the same points - quite apt as they'd not been more than a few boat lengths apart all day.

Rounding out the top ten were the consistent Phil and Naomi Smith in their 200 from, Ben Holden’s Contender (chasing his brother) and Dylan Nobles Musto Skiff (narrowly beating his aged uncle!). Commiserations to Matt Mee who would have cracked the top 5 if he hadn't been caught out by the Black Flag rule in R1 – naughty!

Top of the 21 strong Laser contingent was National Champion Jack Wetherell who had often led the slow fleet up the first beats but fell back offwind to finish in 13th overall. He was followed by Chris Duffin (15th) and Ian Escritt (19th). Leading the 11 Toppers was Callum Escritt in 45th, Nick Deveraux (57th) and Luke Cowling (60th). Leading Ladies were Anne and Julz Noble (18th) in a 29er, followed by the 420 of Lucy Yeates / Ellie Devereux in 37th.

All in all, a great event with superb facilities, fantastic food, and most important - great sailing, competition right through the fleet, and one of the closest finishes possible.

The club hopes everyone enjoyed their ‘Day in the Dales’ and will be back to sail with us again soon.

The winter series is open to visitors and starts on 8th January going through to the end of February.
