The Bosham Sailing Club Youth Sailing Fund has awarded 13 year old Sophie Hempsell a cheque for £500 to help her achieve her ambition to become a member of the British sailing squad for the Olympics 2020. Sophie is now ranked in the top forty optimist sailors in the UK and the Fund will help her compete internationally to gain more experience.
Sophie started sailing aged seven, and spends most weekends travelling the length of the country to compete at the highest standards. Earlier this year she came 5th in the Senior Silver Fleet at the Optimist National Championships held in Pwllheli, North Wales.
The Bosham Sailing Club Youth Sailing Fund is available to assist any BSC cadet under the age of 25 years who may need some help with expenditure to proceed and /or improve their sailing experience and skills. Over the last few years, the Fund has assisted young sailors taking part in competitions such as the Mirror World Championship, the Mini-Transat International, the 420 Ladies World and European Championships.
The Fund relies on the generosity of Bosham Sailing Club members who have either contributed directly to the Fund or arranged fund raising events. Fund Trustee, John Hinton, who presented the cheque to Sophie said: “Sophie has dedicated an incredible amount of time and effort to achieve these already high standards of sailing. We are proud to be able to help her on her way to realising her ambitions.”
Any donations to the Fund would be gratefully received to help other youngsters realise their sailing ambitions. Please send cheques payable to ‘BSC Youth Sailing Fund’ to The Office, Bosham Sailing Club, The Quay, Bosham, West Susssex PO18 8LU.
