The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust finished one of their four day summer yacht trips today (4th August), and this week they had a little extra help from the People’s Postcode Trust, a grant-giving body funded entirely by the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.

The Cancer Trust, founded by Dame Ellen MacArthur in 2003, aims to inspire young people’s cancer recovery through sailing. The four day yacht trips provide a unique experience for the young people, where they get the chance to test themselves in a safe and supportive environment.

So when the People’s Postcode Trust discovered that the Cancer Trust’s services were struggling as a result of transport issues, it awarded the team £10,000 funding to purchase their own van to transport the children safely.

Speaking about the funding, Ellen said, “Thank you so much from everybody at the Trust for the van – we are so proud and lucky and the van really will make such a huge difference to our operations. And thanks to everyone who plays the People’s Postcode Lottery!”

This year, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust will support more than 320 youngsters suffering from cancer, leukaemia or other serious illnesses, from all over the UK. Children who have suffered from serious illnesses can suffer from low self esteem and have problems re-engaging with their peers. Experiencing positive personal relationships, and more specifically sail training, is shown to facilitate recovery from cancer and aid development of the youngsters’ confidence.

Speaking about the funding, Clara Govier, Head of Charities at the People’s Postcode Trust said; “People’s Postcode Trust was delighted to support the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, especially as we feel that £10,000 will help enhance the amazing work they do every day.

“The Cancer Trust makes a real difference to the recovery of the children, and being here on the day to see how the charity works is a lovely treat.”

The new van will be used for moving both staff and children around, travel between locations (ferry ports, etc), and moving the kit necessary for running the trips. Most importantly, the van provides a vital safety measure.

The People’s Postcode Trust’s grants applications process is currently open. The Trust accepts applications from community groups, charities, not-for-profit organisations and community interest companies. If you would like to apply for a grant, please visit the People’s Postcode Trust website www.postcodetrust.org.uk for further information. Please note that restrictions apply on the amount that can be applied for depending on what type of organisation you are applying from.
