Shallot wins the Kemp Sails Mini-tonner Trophy

by George Beevor 27 Jun 2011 14:56 BST 25 June 2011

Shallot became the first winner of the Kemp Sails Mini-tonner Trophy on Saturday by being the first mini-tonner on adjusted time under IRC in the JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race.

Michael White’s Evolution 22 now holds both the major titles for Mini-Tonners, adding this trophy to the Mini-Ton Cup won last August, but she was run close by Matt Hitt’s Copeland Fox Terrier Dream On.

Many entrants chose to stay at home or retire early, noticeably, those with local knowledge stayed at home. Hitt later described the run down the back of the island as “Brown Trousers Time for those of us used to the more sheltered waters of Poole”.

Energia, one of the lightest of all boats in the IRC fleet managed an impressive third with Magic Bus and Glass Onion making up the remainder of the finishers.

The Mini-Tonners will next be together, hopefully with the Sonata’s back in the fold for the Portsmouth leg of the IRC Solent Series at the end of July, but thoughts will already be turning to 20th August when Shallot will be defending the Mini Ton Cup hosted by the Island Sailing Club.
