The eleventh running of the River Exe Regatta will take place over the weekend 9/10 July 2011, hosted by Starcross Yacht Club and sponsored by Pennys Estate Agents and Barletts, the Exeter-based refrigeration experts.

The regatta is run jointly by the four sailing clubs on the Exe: Starcross Yacht Club, Exe Sailing Club, Lympstone Sailing Club, and Topsham Sailing Club. Each year one of the clubs takes the lead in organising the event and hosting the social events.

Around 100 boats are expected. There will be racing for cruisers, dinghies, multihulls and windsurfers. There is also a programme of events for junior sailors on Saturday, based around Starcross YC. The regatta will include a big prize fishing contest organised jointly by Exmouth Deep Sea Fishing Club and Starcross Fishing and Cruising Club.

Sunday’s racing includes a long-distance race for the multihulls and a 150 minute pursuit race for all the dinghies.

On the Saturday evening there will be a party at Starcross with featuring Jinx, the Exe SC-based party band. After racing on Sunday there will be the legendary regatta tea and free prize draw. There will be many valuable prizes, kindly donated by Ash Marine and All Gadgets Marine, but you have to be there in person to collect a prize!

Entry forms and full race documentation are available from the Regatta website at www.river-exe-regatta.org.uk . The deadline for entries is noon on Wednesday 6 July 2011.

Starcross Steamer 2012

On the Monday before the Steamer I was concerned; the long range forecast showed a blocking high over the country for the week with no change for the weekend. By Wednesday I was worried.

B14 and RS800 Open at Starcross Yacht Club

8 B14’s and 5 800’s descended on SYC for its annual B14 open. This was smaller than recently and was largely due to the recent Cornish 14 Championship and the forthcoming RS games taking up everyones leave and emptying their piggy-banks!

Did you know?
Feeling under the weather...

Colloquially we use the phrase “under the weather” for someone who’s not feeling too well, often in a rather non-specific way. On board ship though, under the weather was used to describe one of the most unpopular lookout positions. This was on the bow on the windward side of the ship. Generally pretty unpleasant, in bad weather the experience was pretty miserable as the lookout would be continually soaked by the icy, harsh spray, which often did cause him to fall ill.
