Enterprise Open at Rugby & Daventry Sailing Club

by Steve Graham, Martin Davies and Paul Young 29 Mar 2011 07:58 BST 20 March 2011

This event the second in the 2011 Enterprise Midland Area Double Chine series, sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Rugby and Daventry SC on Sunday 20th March.

The eleven boat fleet included visitors from Emberton Park, Redditch, Chester, Rotherham, Midland and Sutton Sailing clubs who enjoyed the steady force two westerly wind and beautiful sunshine.

Being keen to get away race one saw Mike Cossey /Christine Barron(Sutton SC) caught over the line and having to return allowing Jon Woodward/ Steve Graham (Bartley SC), Ges Brown/ Julie Moore (Chester SC) and Martin and Laurence Davies (Rugby and Daventry SC) to fight it out to the windward mark. As the boats closed up downwind it was Jon and Steve that built up a commanding lead until a navigation error on the last lap saw them sailing extra distance. Martin and Laurence took full advantage of this to take the win from Jon and Steve followed by Brian Garrision/ Tom Naylot (Rotherham SC) in third with Ges and Julie fourth.

Race two started after an excellent roast lunch, Jon and Steve rounded the windward mark first with Ges and Julie second. On the following downwind leg Paul Young/ Iain Leiper (Midland SC) gybed into the new breeze early passing several boats and took the lead at the leeward mark. Jon and Steve overtook Paul and Iain at the end of the next beat with Brian and Tom also passing Paul and Iain on the next downwind leg. These positions were then held to the finish with Ges and Julie finishing fourth.

Race three started with everything to play for, Brian and Tom got inside on the first wind shift to lead at the windward mark and then sailed away on the run in good wind leaving the rest of the fleet wallowing in little wind behind.

On the following beat Brian and Tom struggled and the gap was closed when Jon and Steve read the windshifts on the port side of the course excellently to take the lead. On the last beat Martin and Laurence were unable to round the windward mark without infringing Brian and Tom, completing their turns allowed both Brian and Tom and Ges and Julie through giving Brian and Tom the runners up place behind the overall winners Jon and Steve.
