The Blackwater Sailing Club in Basin Road, Heybridge officially opened its new extension last Sunday 25 July 2010. The new facilities consist on the ground floor of a large workshop for maintaining safety boats with an adjoining Steward’s office, replacing an outdated building, with a self-contained Cadet & Training Room above as well as a splendid viewing terrace overlooking the Estuary. To date the thriving Cadet section has not had its own dedicated space and this addition will become a much used facility.
The new building, which took only 6 months to build, was on time and budget and was constructed by T J Evers of Tiptree. The opening ceremony was performed by Ian Marks, long time member of the Club and a former Commodore, who was accompanied by Ben Stewart, one of the youngest Cadets.
The Blackwater Sailing Club has a membership of nearly a thousand and caters for all levels of sailing in both dinghies and cruisers : it also has its own large training lake on the site.
