Thirteen British Moths competed in four races for the Medley Moth Bowl on Sunday 7 June at Medley SC on the Thames at Oxford’s Port Meadow. The event is part of the Somerville Traveller’s Trophy.
The heavy rain promised by forecasters had disappeared by 9 a.m. and the fleet was blessed with sunny skies and a steady Force 3 wind. Junior Tim Lupton (M852, SESCA) startled spectators and sailors alike by leading the National Champion Tim Davison (M834, MSC) and runner-up Colin Hall (M856, Hunts) for most of the first lap, only falling behind them because he missed a mark.
Race 2 began in nil wind, leaving Lupton, Hall and Davison grounded on shallows and Pete Styles (M752, MSC) and Elaine Gillingham (M504, Hunts) were first to the windward mark. But by the end of the race, it was Davison in the lead ahead of Lupton and Hall.
Lupton missed the first bell in race 3, setting out a full three minutes after the fleet, but catching up to achieve a creditable 6th. Terry Mason (M751, MSC) won, followed by Colin Hall and Tim Davison.
The fourth race saw Lupton fly away from the entire fleet to win, followed by Tim Davison and Gary Tompkins (862, SESCA).
