The “Winkle” winkles out the keen sailors
A bright frosty morning and a good wind enticed 21 local sailors, who were also keen to work off the excesses of the Christmas festivities, to take part in the annual “Winkle of the Harbour” open race on Sunday 28th December. The race in Chichester Harbour was organised by Mengeham Rythe Sailing Club which had 6 boats taking part and it was well supported by 11 boats from Hayling Island Sailing Club.
With an ENE force 4 wind and a virtually flat sea, the course was set over Pilsey Sands in Chichester Harbour . The flooding tide made the windward legs of the race fast for most of the boats, though the slower boats suffered as the tide turned towards the end of the race when the wind also strengthened to force 5.
After the race the competitors retired from the near freezing conditions to the warmth of MRSC’s club house for well deserved mulled wine, mince pies and the prize giving. Neil Upton-Brown from HISC, sailing a Musto Skiff, was the overall winner. John Tremlett, sailing a Finn, received a prize for the first fast handicap MRSC boat and Patrick Lewis, sailing a Laser, received a prize for the first MRSC slow handicap boat.
