50th Isle of Sheppey Sailing Club Round the Island Race

The best day of August was Saturday 30th, which fortuitously, happened to be the day chosen for the 50th anniversary of the Isle Of Sheppey Round the Island Race.

Near perfect weather conditions greeted 124 competitors assembled at the Isle Of Sheppey Sailing Club, with sunshine, high temperatures and a moderate south easterly force 4 to 5 wind being the order of the day.

First run in 1959, the annual race around the Island is a unique 40 mile sailing marathon, encompassing sea, river and estuary sailing with tidal conditions, open to all classes of dinghy, catamaran & sailboard, and believed to be the longest event of its type in Europe.

Competitors were set off in four staggered starts, at half hourly intervals, starting with the slow handicap dinghies at 10am, with the 40-strong catamaran fleet last to leave at 11.30am. At Kingsferry a low road bridge acts as an obstacle that must be negotiated by capsizing and walking boats underneath, and is always a popular spot with spectators.

First to finish and overall winners, setting a blistering pace and new course record, were Aaron Young and Rob Butterfield sailing a Tornado Sport catamaran. They smashed the previous record, set in 1980 by Colin Overington in a Dart 18 of 2 hours 29 minutes, by completing the course in 2 hours and 10 minutes.

It was a day for the catamarans as they took the top 3 spots overall, with Rob Lawes/Stuart France (Formula 18) in second overall, and Huw Reynolds/David Williams finishing 3rd also in a Formula 18.

Over 15 safety boats were in attendance, backed up by radio coverage and lookouts around the Island provided by amateur radio group RAYNET, and every competitor who successfully completed the course received a circumnavigation certificate signed by the Commodore.

A brief firework display rounded off a very successful event.
