3000 Travellers at Carsington Sailing Club

by Tony Hunt 25 May 2008 09:21 BST 17-18 May 2008

Four visiting 3000s from as far afield as Cumbria and Kent joined three home boats at Carsington Sailing Club on the fringe of the Peak District for their first Travellers' Trophy open of the year. They were treated to a weekend of winds of Force 3 with the occasional puff of 4, expertly laid start lines and windward-leeward courses, and even sunshine on the Sunday.

Tony Hunt and Suzanne Hall from Wilsonian Sailing Club managed to win all five races, finding the conditions very much to their liking and despite the embarassment of missing then having to return to include the spreader mark at the end of the first beat.

Second place was more hotly contested, Ullswater's Joe Pester and Lyndi Jones in their original Laser 3000 finally getting the better of Carsington's Nick Arran, crewed in different races by sons Patrick and Matthew.

Super consistent in 4th were Will and Matt Archer, while 3k newcomer Stuart Patience and crew Nick improved noticeably over the weekend to secure fifth slot overall, both boats representing the home club. The last two slots were filled by Class Secretary Rob Leigh of Leigh & Lowton, crewed by Mark Hunt and Class Chairman Graham Blake, of Queen Mary, crewed by Chris Arran; both boats had to drop out of racing after the Saturday. On Sunday, Rob filled the role of official photographer, while Graham lent pre-exam moral support to son and regular circuit racer Ben.

Overall Results:

1st 3603 Tony Hunt & Suzanne Hall, 4pts
2nd 3077 Joe Pester & Lyndi Jones, 9pts
3rd 3604 Nick/Patrick/Matthew Arran, 10pts
4th 3319 Will and Matt Archer, 16pts
