Anglesey Offshore Dinghy Race at Red Wharf Bay Sailing Club

by Gordon Lester 30 Jul 2007 11:12 BST 28 July 2007

A lovely sunny morning with a brisk NW wind greeted the 33 monohulls and 6 cats for the Red Wharf Bay Sailing & Watersports Club Annual Anglesey Offshore Dinghy Race from Beaumaris to The Club’s home at Traeth Bychan.

The competitors enjoyed a broad reach up the Menai Straits in perfect sailing conditions amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in Wales. They met interesting conditions in Puffin Sound where there was a heavy swell which tested the skills of the sailors and the accompanying safety craft.

There was then a beat to Benllech via a mark of the Quarry. This leg was 6 miles long and gave a thorough examination of sailing skill. This leg was followed by a fetch to Moelfre. The monohulls could then hoist kites and head for home but the cats carried on up the coats past Yns Moelfre and Yns Dulas to a mark of Point Lynas.

They then enjoyed a fast passage home to Traeth Bychan and a well earned hot meal. From comments gleaned on the beach everyone had a great sail and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The Club would like to thank Robinson’s Brewery who kindly sponsored the event and Jeremy Entwistle, Steve and Gill Norris who organised the day.
