Middle Nene SC held their second South-East Area Series RS200 open meeting on Sunday 17th June. Eighteen boats, including nine visitors, were grateful to be greeted by a force two south westerly and warm sunshine – considerably better than forecast!
Early race one leaders Mike Chapman/Lynne Ratcliffe were passed downwind by Rob Janering/Marianthe Evangelides closely followed by John and Andrew Gill. Local team Matt Yallop/Debbie Walkerdon steadily picked their way up the fleet to finish fourth. The second race saw Steve Dunn/Rachel Jones making the most of the shifts to steal past Chapman/Ratcliffe and Simon Gillow/Emma Harniman to win.
After a relaxing lunch in the sunshine, Race Officer Laurie Jones and his team did well to fit in two more windward-leeward races as the breeze began to fade.
Mark and Sue Pogmore in their brand new boat emphatically won the third race from Chapman/Ratcliffe. Jasper and Fergus Barnham had their best result of the series coming third, just ahead of local class captain Mark Hatsell crewed by Rob Ashman.
As the wind died, Chapman/Ratcliffe held on to their lead to win the final race and the meeting. The Gills finished second overall, a point clear of Gillow/Harniman in third.
Thanks to Middle Nene SC for hosting their second successful RS200 event. The South-East Area Series now moves on to Bexhill SC on Sunday 24th June, followed by Weirwood on Sunday 1st July.
