Melton Mowbray SC welcomed the Leader Class for an Open meeting on 26/27th July. The two races on Saturday took place in light to moderate south-westerly winds. The first race was won by Byron and Viv James, part of the strong home fleet, followed by visitors Chris and Jane Wharmby (Milton Keynes SC).

The second race featured a close start after which Pete Driver and Annette Cave established a convincing lead. The James’s, the Wharmbys and Richard and Sally Morris fought a close battle throughout taking 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions.

The racing on Sunday took place in a light westerly wind, which was at times variable and so did not allow any inattention without risk of losing a position. In race three in the series, the Wharmbys approached the line with Robert and Christine Morris just behind them. The Wharmbys established and held an early lead, followed by Byron James and Pete Driver. Bob Rhodes and Helen Dickenson enjoyed a tacking duel up the final beat against Richard and Sally Morris, to take 4th position just ahead of them. Ron Stimpson and Richard Hewitt were never far behind.

The final race saw Byron and Viv James in lead position followed by Pete Driver and Annette Cave. Richard and Sally Morris spent most of the race in 3rd position, with Chris Wharmby eventually overtaking them with the help of his spinnaker.

Throughout the weekend the light winds meant that good concentration and spotting wind shifts were essential.

Thank you to all at Melton Mowbray SC for a very enjoyable weekend.
